As well as being a bed and breakfast, Shearer Hill is truly a working farm. The owners, Bill and Patti purchased the farm in 1970 when they moved from New York State in an effort to save their troubled marriage and make much needed changes in their lives. They purchased the property in the middle of the winter and to their dismay, when spring rolled around they discovered 3,000 cars littering the previously abandoned property. The cars were removed in the summer and then the “real work” began. The property had no heat, plumbing or water.

Yard Chairs at Shearer Bed & BreakfastBill and Patti persevered and raised 7 children on the farm as well as fostering 60 teenagers over the years. They raised most of their own food and still do to this day. You can be assured that your breakfast will be as fresh as it can get when you stay at this inn. As their children grew and left home, Bill and Patti began to convert the home into the bed and breakfast it is today. Shearer Hill Farm opened for business in 1990 and these two innkeepers have never looked back.

Breakfast is always a special part of staying in an inn, and what Bill and Patti serve up is no exception. Their specialty is baked apples with real Vermont maple syrup harvested from their own farm. If you visit the farm in March, you can be part of making some of the world famous syrup. Bill and Patti are also accomplished candle makers and you can purchase them at the farm or online.

Summer brings chamber music to Marlboro, located a few miles from the farm. World class musicians spend 7 weeks rehearsing together and exchanging ideas. Concerts are given on the weekends while they are in residence from July through August.

Autumn, of course, is leaf season. Enjoy the colors while relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of cars and noise – other than the occasional mooing of cows.

Winter is also a magical time in Vermont. Remember the movie “White Christmas”? Well, Bing Crosby won’t be here to entertain you, but you can take a sleigh ride, build a snowman, cozy up by the fire and snuggle with your sweetie. If speed is more to your liking, snowmobile tours are also available nearby.

With all this fun at your disposal, no matter the season, make a trip to Wilmington, VT and the Shearer Hill Farm Bed and Breakfast. Bill and Patti will make you feel like family. You might not want to leave!
