Savannah’s Most Beautiful Haunted Buildings

savannah

Savannah is in a heated contest with New Orleans for the title of the most haunted city in the United States. Along with that battle is the debate on who has more Spanish Moss, beautiful Antebellum architecture, and Southern charm. There is no shortage of beauty and wonder in Savannah. So, if you are considering exploring the Hostess City Of The South this fall with your family or solo, here is a short list of some of the spookiest and most stunning places in this haunted city.

Take a ghost tour with US Ghost Adventures to get the best spooky experience in Savannah and watch the city’s history come to life through the words of the best tour guides. Tours start at $25 and are fun for all ages. Savannah’s best ghost tour visits many of these sites, so it is a great way to take in all the morbid beauty Savannah has to offer. Until then, get yourself excited by learning about these hauntingly gorgeous houses, hotels, and restaurants.

Davenport House

The Davenport House Museum is a great way to learn about Savannah’s history and is incredibly ornate both inside and out. Tours of this historic 1820 building are given every half hour from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for only $15. But beware! You may run into the spirit of a little girl playing with a rubber ball in the attic. This Federal Style brick building was once a boarding home during the city’s worst Yellow Fever epidemics. It explains a lot about the unusual activity that goes on there.

Kehoe House

Savannah’s Southern hospitality and hauntings are renowned across the country. Combine the best elements of these famed charms at The Kehoe House. Voted “best of the best” by TripAdvisor in 2024, The Kehoe House is a remarkable home built in 1892 surrounded by cast iron fences, gates, stairways, and columns. Two of the Kehoe kids passed away in this former funeral home and are now said to haunt any one of the thirteen rooms available to rent.

Juliette Gordon Low House

This light-pink stucco-covered home is the birthplace of the America Girl Scouts. Few realize that Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low lived in Savannah, and even fewer are aware of the divorce Low went through and the ghosts that now haunt her childhood home. Her mother and father have chosen to stick around in the afterlife and, indeed, have something to say about their daughter’s ignoble ex-husband.

Bonaventure Cemetery

While roaming about a cemetery may not seem like the ideal way to spend time in Savannah, the Bonaventure Cemetery is an eerily enjoyable exception. The beautifully designed cemetery has been a common meeting ground for Savannahians since 1846. Victorian walkways lead you under drooping Spanish moss hanging from the sturdy branches of the Live Oak trees. The gravestones are quite a sight to take in but beware, many of them are protected by the spirits. Most famously is the grave and ghost of Little Gracie Watson, who has often appeared by her delicately carved tombstone.

The Owens-Thomas House

One of the first houses in the United States to have indoor plumbing, the Owens-Thomas House dates back to 1819 and is genuinely a magnificent creation. Sightings of a Lady In Gray have captivated visitors to the home. She has even been spotted by John Berendt, author of the hit 1994 novel Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil!

Mercer Williams House

You can visit this house in picturesque Monterey Square, where a 1981 murder inspired Berendt to bring Savannah’s gothic and graceful paradoxical world to life in his best-selling novel. The stoic and ornate Corinthian columns hiding behind the tall palms daintly disguise a gory history. Tragic accidents and murders committed by jilted lovers have transformed this 1860s home into an ethereal wonderland that perfectly encapsulates the alluring light of Savannah’s twisted beauty. You can visit the Mercer Williams House Museum from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Tickets are only $13.50, while children under 6 enter for free.

Visit these unbelievable haunted locations to make your next Halloween or fall trip to Savannah memorable and inspiring. You’ll gain a newfound appreciation for architecture and things that go bump in the night.
