Rock the Holiday Frock

LBD with bold hair and red lips

By Wendy Lyn Phillips –

All the impending holiday hoopla can be overwhelming, so to help you tackle it all brilliantly, may I present: the perfect party dress. No more hiding behind shades of gray and black (sorry, LBD) — this season is all about blazing pops of color. You’ll shine brighter than any strand of lights around, I promise.

I’m such a fan of solids because you can do so much to dress them up or down by adding jewelry, wraps, a fur bolero, changing out the skinny belt to a gold chain belt, and shoes. In addition, when you change the accessories up or add a jacket, you really do change the entire look of the outfit. Think out of the box and mix and match items you may already have in your closet that you haven’t thought about wearing together before.

These three classic solids (that are priced right, I might add) are perfect for just about all body types. The red three quarter sleeve on the left is from Ann Taylor and is perfect not only for the holidays, but will take you through Valentine’s Day as well. It denotes courage, passion and boldness. Wearing it might give you a little of that character if need be.

The silk crepe strapless in teal is also from Ann Taylor and comes in a variety of other colors too. It’s simply classic and elegant…period. The winter white in the middle is a quilted diamond fabric from White House Black Market. Again, it’s a chic winter statement piece that would be a joy to accessorize…tis the season!

Did I mention sequins? We’re never too old for some sparkly glimmer…on our body or our face. I recommend that you wear shimmer on your eyes, your cheeks or your lips just not all three at the same time! Here’s three more options you may need in your wardrobe this holiday season. From left to right, an animal print lazer cut sequin flare dress available at Zappo’s (which always boasts free shipping and returns), the middle is a classic silver sequin skirt from Chico’s and the far right is a panel shift with sequin middle also from Chico’s. All three styles not only help you shine, but are versions that you’ll wear over and over and that’s a good return on investment.

Taking a trip to the ballet? Do you prefer lace? In the hottest color this season…emerald green? Another great find for your holiday dressing may be to check out all the mod styles from days gone by. Like this hounds tooth dress on the far right below; ideal for a stroll through the park on a sunny California day with a scarf tied around your head, tights and flats. All three are from ModCloth. Visit their site to see more vintage favorites.

If you’re a plus size or have larger breasts, you’ll want to flatter your figure, not hide completely behind it. A wrap dress like this one from one of my favorite chic websites for curvy women is both sleek and bold. It will drape over your curves with stylish ease and defines your waist. A style like this animal print suits both the party and the workplace. Another holiday favorite from Gwynnie Bee is this Karen Kane Sequin dress. It easily converts from the office desk to dinner out.

If you simply cannot get away from your LBD as the Go-To dress of the season, please make sure that it’s a standout dress like the one on the right. And do something fabulous with your hair like the top bun shown on the left. Add unforgettable accessories like red hot lips. Every version of ruby red to magenta red and Bordeaux will be appropriate holiday choices to draw all the attention from the waist up. Add your sparkly holiday smile and voila, you’ve got a picture perfect pose.

Wherever you’re going this holiday season…go in knockout style, you never know who you might run in to and we all want to look our absolute best just in case it’s you-know-who.
