Daily Devotional – “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; Matt 6:20 (NASV)
Friend to Friend
Several years ago my family went to visit my husband’s brother and his family. We were sitting in the kitchen reminiscing about the past, laughing and just having a wonderful time together. Ken, my husband’s favorite aunt had passed away. She had been a nun for most of the years of her life. She was a quiet, humble woman from a humble abode. She was not a flashy person in her appearance, but rather plain and simple, certainly a “no bling” kind of lady.
Ken’s mother called me to come back into her bedroom where she was staying to speak with me in private. She reached into her purse and pulled out a box. She placed it in my hand. It was a lovely gold box. “This is for you,” she said. I opened it and inside was a beautifully jeweled slide bracelet with 21 stones-both precious and semi-precious.
The box contained a slip of paper with my name hand-written on it from my aunt who had passed away. Beautifully wrapped and written, I knew that the gift was meant for me. How special. That gift was assigned to me before Aunt Virginia went on to glory.
Tears were streamed down my face. I was so overwhelmed with a sense of love and joy, not because of the actual value of the gemstones or bracelet, but because of the spirit behind the gift. The fact that she would take the time to personally write my name on this gift and assign it to me, long before she knew she would be leaving this world, was astounding. This bracelet was one of her most treasured possessions, and she so graciously decided to give to me.
What treasures do you have? What treasures are you laying up? What treasures will you leave behind?
If you know Jesus, your name is written. It is written in the book of Life. God loves us so much that even before we were born He named us. You are His treasure.
Let’s Pray
Today help me to feel like I am treasured. Help me to understand that the greatest treasure I have is your love. Help me to feel that love in a new way today, so that I might become fruitful for your kingdom. In Jesus’ Name, I pray.
Amen
