As you age, your skin changes. That’s no secret. It can be become more dull, thinner, and develop fine lines, wrinkles, and/or age spots. Some of this can be helped with a proper skincare routine, but it’s important to update your makeup routine as you age as well.
There are a lot of reasons we wear makeup. Some women use it to cover up imperfections with their skin, others use it to highlight their favorite facial features, and some use it for both. If you’re looking to revamp your current makeup regimen, we’ve got some helpful tips to keep you feeling vibrant and beautiful.
8 Tips for Women Over 50
- Exfoliate Regularly: While not entirely a makeup tip, exfoliating your skin regularly removes dry patches and dead skin cells to make your face appear brighter. This helps give you a smoother, more even surface to apply makeup. Don’t forget to apply a moisturizer after you exfoliate.
- Apply a Primer: Before putting on makeup, ready your face with a primer that has hyaluronic acid and collagen for better moisture. These types of primers help fill fine lines and wrinkles.
- Use a BB Cream: Instead of a heavy foundation, consider using a BB cream. A BB cream brightens your face and evens out your skin tone. Be sure to choose one with SPF to protect your skin from UV rays as well.
- Choose the Right Concealer: Dark circles can become more pronounced as you age, so you might find yourself reaching for under-eye concealer more often. Make sure you’re choosing a concealer that won’t settle into lines and draw attention to wrinkles.
- Enhance Eyebrows Naturally: Nowadays fuller eyebrows are on trend. If your eyebrows are on the thinner side or very light, you can use a pencil or shadow to enhance this feature. Be care to create a natural eyebrow look, using soft lines and a light touch. Eyebrows that are drawn on too heavily look more cartoonish than natural.
- Curl Your Lashes: Bright eyes help you look more awake and more youthful. A great way to achieve that look is to curl your eyelashes. Hold the curler at the root of your lashes and squeeze for about 10-15 seconds to perk up your eyes. For even more of a pop, add a swipe of mascara after you curl.
- Set Your Lipstick: Applying too much lipstick can cause it to bleed off of your lips and onto the skin around your mouth. To keep lipstick in place, consider using a lip liner. Instead of applying lipstick directly onto your lips, apply it with a brush, starting at the center and spreading it out to the corners.
- Consider a Cream Blush: More traditional powder blushes can settle into lines and wrinkles, making you appear older instead of younger. Instead, try a cream blush that gives your cheeks some color and adds a healthy glow.
