It is not your fault that you are fat. Who really believes that? If you are raising your fork instead of a free weight, you know the first line of attack is put the fork down and pick the weight up. However, there really are things that you should evaluate besides your eating and work out habits in the battle to lose weight.

This week in a published update by Life Extensions it was reported that light exposure at night could contribute to weight gain. If you sleep with your computer and cell phone charging next to your bed or your lit alarm clock casting a green glow across your room, you are sleeping with light that could be disturbing your body’s ability to release the hormone melatonin.

Melatonin needs the dark of night to be released by the pineal gland. It send signals to the brain that it is time to sleep. If your room is filled with light your brain and hormonal system will release cortisol instead. Cortisol is often called the stress hormone. Once it floods your system you are setting yourself up for sleeplessness and weight gain. Cortisol is not your friend in the bedroom.

Place your glowing alarm clock under your bed and charge your electronics in another room. If you have uncovered windows that leak light, cover them. Weight loss is an enemy that requires a three pronged attack; eat less, exercise and get a good night’s sleep. Creating a dark bedroom is far easier than passing on the cheesecake. This isn’t a weight loss miracle but it is a place to start
