January 19, 2018-Where’s the Thrill and Adventure in Life?

Today’s Truth

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13, NIV).

fall scents for your home

Friend to Friend

They were everywhere. Every corner, wall and shrub seemed to be lined with them. . . cobwebs. I sighed, acknowledging the subliminal messages behind them. I’d gotten behind on taking care of my house. I wasn’t in control of all the stuff I needed to be handling. Things were acting on me more than I was acting on them. I was just as caught up in the web called busyness as the spider that spun the sticky trap.

All these webs were signs of falling behind.

Wasn’t I created for more than trying to keep up with life?

I’ve hit many moments like this in my past. There have been times I’ve been wiping a baby’s behind saying, “Is this it, God?” Times I’ve loaded the dishwasher saying, “What’s the purpose in this?” Times I’ve woken, brushed my teeth, washed my face, got dressed, then repeated six more days and wondered, “What does all this really matter?”

Sigh. Life is a cobweb that tries to trap us in monotony if we let it.

But we don’t have to. You see, Jesus was radical, transformational, revolutionary, unexplainable, miraculous, wondrous, adventurous and groundbreaking even in the most normal of times.

A simple walk on the street could end up as a walk producing healing.

A few lines in the sand could recreate a woman’s whole image.

A drink of water could turn a woman away from all her soul-ravaging old habits.

Jesus is not boring. Neither is His plan for you.

It is thrilling, because:

– You are alive with Christ (the one who holds all power and authority).

– You are a “new creation. The old is gone, the new is here.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

– You are empowered to live like Jesus. (see 1 John 2:6).

– You are “the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14)

– You can walk momentarily “in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25)

– You lose your life for Christ, and then find it.

This is adventure, thrill, and calling.

Friends, the world isn’t acting on us. But with Christ in us, we act with love pouring out on it. This mindset changes every detail of a day. There is no mountain of laundry that doesn’t have monumental importance when done in union with Christ. There, he may give you the wisdom you’ve been searching for or the peace you’ve been asking to experience. He may give the desire to finally reach out to that one person you’ve been meaning to talk to.

What’s before you? The magnificent or the mundane? Why not see Christ, right there with you, wanting to make an impact through you?

His touch can make what you’ve discounted as “insignificant” highly magnificent.

Let’s Pray

God, give me your perspective. Give me a heart to love. Give me a heart to praise. Give me a desire to know you. Give me an ear to hear your Word. Give me greater faith. Give me you, Jesus. Give me more grace to know you and to love you.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

Think of a duty, a job, or an act of service you are prone to hate. Invite God in and ask Him how you can do it together. It may start with prayer, praise or simply pondering His faithfulness.
