The majority of people I meet are under the misconception that a wardrobe makeover or a personal shopping experience will involve spending hundreds of pounds having to buy a plethora of new clothes in order to achieve a workable wardrobe. This week’s blog is to show you that this is simply not the case.

The key to building a successful capsule wardrobe is to have the basics in place, add to these a few well chosen accessories and you have the tools to build a fabulous wardrobe.

I have taken 11 items of clothing and 10 accessories and have put together 15 different outfits!

If you were to add one more vibrant top, another cardigan in a bright colour, one more jacket and a dress this would give you a host of more outfit combinations, certainly enough for a different outfit for everyday of the month, with a look to suit almost any occasion, whether that’s a walk in the country, an important business event, or a cocktail party.

Wardrobe Basics

  • Dark blue jeans – Dark coloured jeans are far more versatile than pale denim as they can be dressed up or down, and a must if you are over 40. On the whole it’s best to leave pale blue denim to the younger generation!
  • Dark trousers
  • 2 skirts – 1 plain and 1 textured
  • White shirt
  • Cardigan
  • Jumper
  • Patterned Blouse
  • Vest top
  • A  Jacket – Textured, plaid or tweed to add interest
  • A tailored coat

I have chosen classic winter colours to build this particular wardrobe  but whatever your seasonal colouring happens to be ensure your trousers, skirt  and coat are the same colour, and that your jacket and textured skirt have the base colour in them.

Accessories

  • Structured smart Bag
  • Unstructured casual bag
  • 4 patterned/textured scarves
  • 2 necklaces
  • 1 belt
  • Flat boots
  • Heeled shoe boots

Having wardrobe basics in place is key to building a workable a wardrobe, and adding different accessories will ring the changes and keep your look current and up to date.
