Daily Devotional – Wisdom Speaks Cautiously

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Proverbs 13:1-9. Jesus said that it is not what we put into our mouths that makes us unclean. It is what comes out from the mouth that defiles us. The tongue holds the blessing or curse that we have for others.

“A wise son heeds his father’s instruction,
but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.

From the fruit of their lips people enjoy good things,
but the unfaithful have an appetite for violence.

fall scents for your home

Those who guard their lips preserve their lives,
but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.

A sluggard’s appetite is never filled,
but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.

The righteous hate what is false,
but the wicked make themselves a stench
    and bring shame on themselves.

Righteousness guards the person of integrity,
    but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;
another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

A person’s riches may ransom their life,
but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes.

The light of the righteous shines brightly,
but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.”

How can you bless God and condemn others with the same mouth?

One of the fruits that the Holy Spirit bestows on those that He rests upon, is self-control. No matter what we may encounter, both good and bad news is met with self-control. Living in a world that swings from one extreme to the other, you may be labeled a party pooper for displaying control

Self-control covers more than our behavior, but it includes the words that we speak. It is all too easy to act out and retaliate with words toward someone. Forgetting that we are speaking to those created in the image of God, our words may also create greater problems for us in the future. All too often will you see someone screaming and yelling in traffic? They may feel justified in their anger, but hopefully, they do not enrage the wrong person.

Let us hate what is false and speaks against the purposes and character of our God. Let our words align with the heartbeat and words of God.

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Thank you that You have given me words. Like You spoke the world into existence, I can use the words to create blessings for those around me. Help me Holy Spirit with Your fruit, so that I do not cause harm to myself with my words today.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
