Daily Devotional – We Are Not Called to Win

daily devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from John 15:5-13. As a competitive person, I have always worked hard and strived for victory. Resting does not come easy for me as I want to get that which I want, not leaving anything to chance.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

God will win, and that is not by chance

Jesus has called us to a new command. Taking 10 commands, He focused on just 2. Love and worship God above everything, and love those around you. Fill the need for love that we each crave. Seek to help others and their needs.

So often when we strive and fight for our needs and opportunities, we push past and climb over others. In an attempt to get what we need and desire, we fail to love and encourage others around us.

God has not called us to win. We are called to abide in Him. In this coming year, let us get better at focusing our minds and efforts on abiding in God rather than trying to win in our own efforts. God’s plan will succeed, let us not fret in our own strength!

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Thank you that You are the leader and ruler of all. You oversee and work all things together. Draw me closer to You so that I may not see and be distracted by the concerns of this world.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
