Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Colossians 2:6-10. Ethics seeks to resolve questions of human morality by defining concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice, justice, and crime. It is a field of intellectual inquiry and moral philosophy. So what does ethics have to do with truth?
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world rather than on Christ.
9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.”
Can ethics exist without truth?
“The objects of philosophy are to ascertain facts or truth, and the causes of things or their phenomena; to enlarge our views of God and His works.” Noah Webster
Paul warns us in Colossians to not derogate our faith in the Almighty to religious practices, traditions, and ceremonies. Christianity is a life experience as we walk with Jesus and His saving grace.
Religion is a way of controlling others. It tells the followers what to do when to do it and how to do it. Since our sins were forgiven over a thousand years ago on the cross, forgiveness, and salvation are for receiving. We can not do anything to obtain salvation.
Therefore, works driven by morals and ethics are like clanging bells, the truth is that we are forgiven if only we will receive it. As we immerse ourselves in God, we will bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The most important of these fruits is love. Love not only for God but for those around us!
Let’s Pray
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you, Jesus, that You came to earth to die and pay the price for salvation. I know that there is nothing that I can do to earn the salvation that You offer us.
In Jesus Name,
Amen
