Daily Devotional – The Shadow in The Fire

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Daniel 3:13-18. So often we fight, kicking and screaming because of the fire we see in our lives. We fear the storms and refining experiences in life because our flesh LOVES comfort!

“Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?”

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

The fire burnt their restraints

I am so impressed by the words and actions of Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. They were the ones that backed Daniel from their arrival in Babylon. They had seen God’s hand and blessing not only on Daniel’s life but their own. Their faith must have been fanned and encouraged by Daniel. As a group, they prayed together and trusted each other and God with their lives.

It would have been so easy to just physically bow the knee before Nebuchadnezzar. All the other Israelite’s had done so (You don’t see the others being thrown in the fire). The gentlemen knew that their fate to date and into the future was held by God and not the men standing in front of them. If it was God’s will to not deliver them, they were happy to sacrifice their lives for the Almighty and only God in heaven.

These 3 gentlemen did not shout and defend themselves. They humbly stood firm and convicted. They were lucky enough to see and experience the deliverance from God and to walk in the fire with Jesus. Today we are called to humbly walk in the fire with Jesus if it be needed. God will always give you the best outcome with His mercy.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, God, that You are the one that walks with me through the fires and difficulties of life. I need not fear the uncertainty and uncomfortable. You are in control and Your mercy is greater than anything I could imagine.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
