Daily Devotional – Searching for a Savior

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Matthew 2: 1 -12. The wise men or Magi had been waiting for and looking out for the star. It had been prophesized that God was sending a savior, and it had been prophesized about the star. They knew to be on the lookout and were waiting for it to appear.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:

fall scents for your home

“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
    who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b]

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Even once the Magi spotted the star, it took them a while to track and follow it. Soon found themselves in Bethlehem. They were on the search for their savior and invested plenty of time and effort to track the King of all Kings.

Considering the effort that the wise men vested into the search and hunt for their savior, they must have been desperate for His redemption.

I do wonder in today’s time and day what would happen if you headed off to track a star? Imagine how your family and friends would respond to you heading out to track down this baby that was born. You knew from your studies of the bible that a prophet was born and you were going to head out. The level of sacrifice would go beyond the humiliation of these friends and your family to a complete abandonment of income and many securities. I’m challenged by their commitment and determination to hunt down their savior.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, God, for sending Jesus to us as a baby. We are grateful for His sacrifice in coming to earth to be our savior and redeemer. I commit to searching after You in the same way that the wise men did. I will search with complete dedication and abandonment of the things in this world!

In Jesus’ name, Amen
