Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Hebrews 12:14-17. Bitterness affects most greatly the one who holds it. It is an indication of extreme wickedness and gall. It is evil speaking or evil feelings held against another.
“Without holiness no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. 16 See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. 17 Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done.“
Peace starts with forgiveness
The root word means, “to cut or to prick, literally, sharp or pointed.” Bitterness is poison and it does defile. It often stems from being hurt or wounded in some way, and therefore the offended party holds another accountable for a wrong. Bitterness is the result of refusal to forgive, thus emotions turn into hatred, rage, or potentially violent nature.
Frequently the embittered has an inward desire or need to retaliate. It can affect the physical body and it also grieves the Holy Spirit. It is a tool that Satan frequently uses to defile those who will walk in agreement with it. It will destroy the one held captive by it. Today, choose to forgive and let all that poison flow out of your soul.
Let’s Pray
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your love and forgiveness. Help me to extend forgiveness to others, as you have extended it to me. Help me Lord to rid my soul of the bitterness I have carried. May love fill my heart, where bitterness did reside. Help me to love like you love and forgive as you forgive and I choose today to be at peace with all men.
In Jesus Name,
Amen
