Daily Devotional – Praying with Purpose

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Matthew 6:5-14. Prayer is our time and opportunity to enjoy an intimate moment with our Father in heaven. Intimacy does not require formality, rather it flows in spontaneity.

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.[b]

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Come before God as you are!

Have you ever wondered how some people seem to be able to move God’s hand? Why is it that some people can pray and God moves? We can so easily be convinced to mimic or imitate the words or actions of others.

Our prayer lives are comparable to an iceberg. While it may appear small and inconspicuous, the iceberg is considerably greater in size below the surface than above it. The time that we spend in God’s presence behind the scenes is far greater than the time that we pray behind closed doors.

Prayer is not about the formalities or the words actually spoken. It is about the heart, the attitude, and intimacy. Let us not be fooled by the things seen in the open, but strive for the relationship developed in privacy.

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Thank you that You call me to come and listen to You. You share Your wisdom and love with me in a 1 on 1 time. I draw nearer to You today just as I am. Speak to me, I am listening!

In Jesus’s Name,
