Daily Devotional – Understanding Fear

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Proverbs 1: 1-7There is a fear that is right and just. Fear of God! Truly knowing God and who He is, will but only lead to a knee-shaking quivering fear. Not only does this fear bring you to a place of respect for who God truly is, but fearing God places all the other fears into perspective.

“The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

for gaining wisdom and instruction;
    for understanding words of insight;
for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
    doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to those who are simple,[a]
    knowledge and discretion to the young—
let the wise listen and add to their learning,
    and let the discerning get guidance—
for understanding proverbs and parables,
    the sayings and riddles of the wise.[b]

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
    but fools[c] despise wisdom and instruction.”

Wisdom is a great thing. With age, wisdom comes through the hard knocks and experiences of life. How many of us though learn our lessons the first time around? There is certainly value in being teachable and willing and able to learn from others and their mistakes.

In order to be willing to learn, we need to be humble. We can not view our way, our truth as the only factual truth. So when I come face to face with God, I see Him for who He really is, and I very quickly get humbled into submission. From my humble viewpoint, I can be open and listen to God’s instructions.

Let us not be foolish and ignore the teaching and wisdom of God. Let’s humble ourselves before God and be open to His teaching and knowledge. He did create it all!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, God You offer us the opportunity to gain wisdom and understanding. Thank you that You will give to those who seek after it and ask for it. I ask that You bless us with Your wisdom and understanding as we seek You!

In Jesus’ name,

Amen
