Daily Devotional – We All Need Some Rest

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Hebrews 4: 1-13. We are not robots, and before you know it, you need some rest. None of us can continue without taking time to recuperate and regroup. We all know the feeling of being burnt out all too well!

“Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.[a] Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’”[b]

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”[c] And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”

Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience, God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts.”[d]

For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[e] just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

The third command of the law of Moses from God was to take a day of rest. God planned to set aside a day where we would concentrate on Him and rest our bodies, minds, and souls.  “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” Exodus 20: 8-11.

I believe that we often forget that the battle is God’s. We fight not merely against the physical world we see, but against the unseen kingdom of darkness. If the battle is God’s, then why are we trying to win it? We do not have the tools in hand to fight the unseen world. The only tool that we need is prayer though.

God has already won the victory and we should rest in this knowledge. No matter how difficult things look, Jesus has overcome death, the greatest battle of all. We should rest in God’s victory and strength, knowing that He is bringing it all together!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, Jesus, that You were able to overcome the greatest battle and the unseen kingdom of darkness. Help me to remember that You have done it all and all that You ask of me is to believe and rest in You. I give the battle over to you today, may You fight this battle for me.

In Jesus name
Amen
