Daily Devotional – Light in the Darkness

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Matthew 5: 13-16. As one that spends time in the presence of God, our faces will shine with His glory. Moses experienced it, and the Israelites witnessed his glowing face in the dessert. We can not help but radiate God’s grace.

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

In the gospel of John, he starts saying that Jesus is the word of God. In Psalm 119, David talks about the word of God (Jesus) being the lamp unto our path. “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” They are both speaking of Jesus and how He is the light of the world.

Jesus provides the light to find our way in a dark world. He shines bright enough so that we can find God and our way to Him. Jesus doesn’t want us to simply hide His light. He has given us His light and we are to collectively light up the world for His glory.

I love over Christmas time when all the attendees light their candles. In a dark church, the collection of candles lights up the building very well! You can clearly see detail and your way around. One candle alone wouldn’t provide the same clarity. It is the accumulation of the many candles that make it so bright. In the same way, we need to shine Jesus’ light in our world. As each of us shines His light, the accumulation of us all doing it will compound into a clear, bright light for God’s glory!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, God, that you that Jesus is the word of God. He is not only the lamp unto my path before me, but the bright light that draws all men and women unto You. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit today to beaming overflowing levels! As I reflect Jesus, the light of the world, brighten my world for Your glory!

In Jesus name
Amen
