Daily Devotional – Life Changing Scripture 1

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Matthew 10:9-20. With the year winding down and many people anxious to jump into the new year, here are some life-changing scriptures. This scripture hit me so hard through an audio bible that I almost crashed and had to pull the car over. I immediately had to rewind and listen to it again.

“Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts— 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep. 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting. 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”

This is not the Jesus bible school taught me about!

I am fortunate to have grown up in the church. I was taught about Jesus from a young age, and He drew me closer through the years. Jesus, to me, was this perfect son of God that always taught us to surrender. He taught us to give the other cheek.

As one who knew enough of the bible to call myself a Christian, I felt as though I knew God. Taking what had been taught to me from pastors and other well-meaning church leaders, God floored me with this scripture.

I was seeking God like never before having come through a tragedy in my life. I was consuming the Bible and God’s word like never before. Then here I hear Jesus telling His disciples to be “be as shrewd as snakes”. I have met shrewd business people and I would never have pictured Jesus as a shrewd person. 

Taken just like that, allows for the misinterpretation of the scripture. Jesus followed that statement up with the command of “as innocent as doves”. God has not called us to be doormats, but has called us to be overflowing in mercy, grace, and love!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, Jesus, that You have given us guidance on how to live this life among others. Give me Your wisdom and discernment to know when others are looking to take advantage of me. Help me also to be as soft and loving as You have been towards me.
