Daily Devotional – Hungry and Thirsty?

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Nehemiah 9: 19-24. I love the latest saying, “I’m Hangry!” The hungrier I get, the shorter my fuse. But I had at least one meal in the last 12 hours. Ever fasted for a couple of days, a week or two?

“Because of your great compassion, you did not abandon them in the wilderness. By day the pillar of cloud did not fail to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take. 20 You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst. 21 For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing, their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.

22 “You gave them kingdoms and nations, allotting to them even the remotest frontiers. They took over the country of Sihon[c] king of Heshbon and the country of Og king of Bashan. 23 You made their children as numerous as the stars in the sky, and you brought them into the land that you told their parents to enter and possess. 24 Their children went in and took possession of the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites, who lived in the land; you gave the Canaanites into their hands, along with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with them as they pleased.”

One of my frustrations in life is seeing the victories and immediate glory for those around me that act in deceitfully. I’m sure that you have seen how those with less than stellar morals and standards get ahead in this world. It is disheartening to follow God’s laws and commands, to only have someone take advantage of you.

Coming back to Matthew 5 from yesterday, Jesus said that those that “hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled”. It is all too easy to be sucked into the thought of giving an inch for the big picture. Tempted to turn away from God’s laws for what we think is a solution or immediate fix.

God’s promise is that He will fill us. He will provide for our every need as He fills us. We need to trust in His plan and His hand. He is working in every situation. Focus on God, thirst, and hunger for Him. Crave His presence and His approval. Don’t give away your great inheritance for one meal (Genesis 25:32)

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you are the one that fulfills all our needs. I know that sometimes I may not see your provision in the time that I think it should be. Help me to stay focused on Your picture and continue to hunger and thirst after You!

In Jesus’ name, Amen
