Daily Devotional – The Great Light

daily devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from John 8:2-12. The Great I am is the light that shines brightly upon the mountain top. He illuminates all truth and the way to salvation. We can see because of the light of God that reveals everything.

“At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

11 “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Light reveals all sins with no condemnation

Jesus proclaimed that He was the light of the world. All of us that choose to walk and live in His light don’t walk in darkness, sickness, and bound to our sin. We live a life free and with no burdens or fears of what is hiding behind the corner.

Rather than operating in the light and openness of the day, the Pharisees went around collecting sinners in the middle of the night. Bringing a sinner before Jesus to catch Him out, Jesus shone His light on the sins of all.

The beautiful part of this event is that Jesus, the only blameless one to live upon this earth sees clearly. No matter the darkness and sin that we fall into, Jesus does not condemn us. Let us live an open book life, fully transparent to the light of God. We can live life confidently knowing that there is no condemnation from our creator, only forgiveness for our confessed sins!

Let’s Pray

Dear Jesus,

Thank you that You bring Your bright and great light to every nook and cranny of my life. Shine Your light so that I may confess my sins to You knowing that You will not condemn or turn me away!

In Jesus Name,

Amen
