Daily Devotional – The Gospel is About Sacrifice

daily devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Matthew 16:22-28. Have you ever considered the strength that it took Jesus to even get to the cross upon which He lay down His life? Following His beating, He just could not continue to carry the heavy crossbeam.

“Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Jesus carried His cross, now it is your turn!

I find it interesting that Jesus addressed His disciples about assuming the sacrifice of following in the steps at this time. Jesus just rebuked Peter for being lead by his flesh. Peter was willing to sacrifice his life in battle to defend Jesus and resist His death.

We all get things wrong and put our foot in it. However, when we are being led by God and His Holy Spirit, we will be less likely to step in front of God’s plans.

Commitment goes hand in hand with sacrifice. Professional athletes are committed to their dreams of being the best in the world. They certainly sacrifice much in the everyday pleasures of ordinary folk. Let us be world-class Christians that are committed through sacrifice for the glory of God!

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Forgive me Father for me being like Peter and getting in the way of Your ways and plans. I want to be more committed to You and Your Kingdom, no matter the sacrifice!

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen
