Daily Devotional – The Gospel Calls for a Choice

daily devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from 1 Kings 18:20-24. Indecision causes great weakness. Stradling the fence will have us questioning both possibilities all while making no decision at all.

“So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”

But the people said nothing.

22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire—he is God.”

Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”

God will prove Himself faithful every time!

The Israelites throughout the Old Testament flip and flop between times of obedience and disobedience. It would be wonderful to see that they acknowledged their wrongdoing from introspection and conviction from the law of God.

Rather than the people of Israel contemplating their actions and deeds against the law of God, they needed the rod of discipline. Time and time again the people of Israel fluctuated between what they knew to be right in God’s eyes, and their fleshly desires.

Like the Israelites, we often get caught up desiring to feed our selfish pride and desires. We get caught living in a position trying to serve two masters and live life looking over our shoulder.

God calls us to live committed to one calling. So let us remember how the rewards of our sins are death, and determinedly stay far away from a life of regrets. Let us focus our full gaze on the beautiful face of Jesus our savior, and never take our eyes from Him!

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Forgive me Father for thinking that I actually know better than You. As my creator, You know me intimately and know what is best for me. I resign myself to You and Your control today and forever.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen
