Daily Devotional – Gnats for Those That Turn Their Backs

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Exodus 8:15-19. It is always amazing how we humans make commitments when our backs are against the wall. An agreement made with a person under distress will never hold up. In the same way, information obtained by torture is most likely lies.

But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.

The Plague of Gnats

16 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the ground,’ and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats.” 17 They did this, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with the staff and struck the dust of the ground, gnats came on people and animals. All the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. 18 But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not.

Since the gnats were on people and animals everywhere, 19 the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the Lord had said.

Listening to God

One of the most interesting aspects of the 10 plagues that God served Egypt with was the reversal of approval from Pharaoh. So often Pharaoh gave in to God’s requests, only to harden his heart and not keep to his commitment. As quickly as he was pressured by those around him to give in to the God of Israel, Pharaoh would go back on his word.

I can not imagine living day and night, fighting the thousands of gnats that were bugging the Egyptians. I struggle with the idea of camping and having a single mosquito buzzing around my head.

Another interesting point is that this is the first time that Pharaoh’s magicians could not imitate God’s signs. Up until now, God allowed their sorcery to imitate His mighty works. Now God had said that He was the only true God that is Almighty!

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, God, for loving the Israelites enough to stick with it. Knowing that the Israelites would revolt and choose to worship fake gods, You still remained committed and followed through on Your promises. I commit to You my commitment.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
