Daily Devotional – Earthly Possessions Divided

daily devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Psalm 22:16-23. When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining.

“Dogs surround me,
    a pack of villains encircles me;
    they pierce[e] my hands and my feet.
17 All my bones are on display;
    people stare and gloat over me.
18 They divide my clothes among them
    and cast lots for my garment.

19 But you, Lord, do not be far from me.
    You are my strength; come quickly to help me.
20 Deliver me from the sword,
    my precious life from the power of the dogs.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
    save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

fall scents for your home

22 I will declare your name to my people;
    in the assembly I will praise you.
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
    Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!”

Where are your treasures stored?

Jesus lay on the cross dying. He obviously would have no more use for his personal belongings. His earthly possessions were divided up among those that scoffed at Him and rejected His claims. They certainly did not consider the claims of Jesus to be raised to life after 3 days.

The disciples that lived and betrothed their commitment to Him were nowhere to be seen. As His friends, would they not have been able to claim the clothing of Jesus? Jesus had given the detailed prophecy of how He would be crucified. If they considered it, they would have remembered that Jesus was going to be raised 3 days later. Would He have not needed His clothes at that point?

Let us truly consider and contemplate the words of God. So many hear the words and do not believe or put them into action. May we bring glory to our Father and the name above all others by following the words and direction of Jesus today.

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Thank you that Jesus did just as He promised, being resurrected 3 days after His death. He has also promised to return for His church and bride. Help me as I look toward that day in obedience and love.

In Jesus’s Name,

Amen
