Daily Devotional – Day 11 of Christmas

Daily devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from John 19:23-27. Mary, the mother that carried and bore Jesus must have stared at the miracle child with such joy. With the promises of the angel ringing in her soul, she got to hold our savior at His most vulnerable.

“When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said,

“They divided my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.”[a]

So this is what the soldiers did.

25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.”

Mary knew who Jesus was!

There is no love that compares to the love of a mother. God knew that He Jesus would bring great joy and great heartache to Mary, but she had been chosen for her humble character.

A mother loves in the shadows. She provides all that the child needs without any need for glory or thanks. Selflessly Mary loved Jesus, and she has given us a great example of how to love each and everyone that we meet.

People will bring us great joy, but they will also bring us great agony and pain. Love is stronger and draws the recipients toward the light of God. Think of those that you can show unconditional, “motherly” love towards. Not for any benefit but for theirs.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, Jesus, that You came vulnerable and dependent on Mary. You loved her till your very last breath on the cross and beyond. Help me by Your Holy Spirit to love others the way that she loved and cared for you!

In Jesus Name,

Amen
