Can I Get A Boost?

Taken from, This is for YOU!: 31 Days of Life Changing Discoveries

MY SON BEGAN his first year of college in mid-August. Although he was able to take many items with him from home, he was not able to take his car. As a result, it had been sitting in the garage undisturbed until he came home for Labor Day weekend. Needless to say, before returning home he had already formulated plans for his weekend—where he was going to go, who he was going to see, and errands he was going to run.

When he arrived home on Friday, he brought with him a huge bag of laundry and dropped it in the laundry room, lovingly greeted everyone, chit-chatted for a few minutes, briefly went over his agenda with me, then grabbed his keys, and headed for the garage. He enthusiastically jumped into his car with great expectation that he was going to be on his way to fulfilling his plans. But, much to his disappointment, when he put his key in the ignition, his car would not start. He tried several times, growing more and more frustrated with every failed attempt. Finally, he got out of his car after reaching an extreme height of aggravation and began agonizing over the fact that, because of a dead battery, he wouldn’t be able to do all that he had set out to accomplish.

As I observed his agitation and rapidly growing anger, I interjected, “Honey, why don’t you just call someone for a boost?” At that moment, it was as if the light bulb on the top of his head came on and with it a smile that suggested, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Nevertheless, he took immediate action. He called a mechanic he knew who had the equipment he needed to give his car a boost. Once it was charged enough to start, he was given the following directions:

  •  Drive long enough to let the charging system do its work.
  • Drive at a constant speed.
  • Turn off all unnecessary accessories such as the radio, air conditioner, etc.

With a running car and directions to keep it going, he set out to fulfill the plans he had made.

There was an awesome lesson in this incident for me. There are times when we allow the gifts that God has given us to sit inactive long enough for our spiritual batteries to die. We keep these spiritual gifts stored in our personal garages while we go off in other directions to do other things. However, when we return and are in need of those gifts to facilitate our plans, because we have not been igniting them on a regular basis, there is not enough power for them to perform.

Much like a battery, if our gifts are not consistently used, then power drainage will occur. As a result, we become extremely disappointed, frustrated, and aggravated because of multiple failed attempts and our ultimate inability to move.

This Is for You: You possess gifts that God has given you to carry you to your purpose and destination. How, and in what areas, have you allowed those gifts to sit idle in your life to the degree you have lost the power to get started? As you identify those areas, it’s time for you to go into action. Ask God in prayer to move you out of the place of disappointment, frustration, and aggravation, and to give you the boost (power) you need to get your engine ignited and then:

  • Move forward long enough to let your charging gifts do their work.
  • Keep going at a consistent speed, versus starting and stopping again.
  • Turn off everything that is an unnecessary accessory in your life.

After all, what good does it do you to have the vehicles if you are not using them to take you where God has planned for you to go?

God’s Word to You: “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you” (2 Timothy 1:6).
