Oxidative stress is the precursor to more than 200 diseases. In fact, it is at the root of every disease. What exactly is oxidative stress? Free radical damage in the body is known as oxidative stress and is how we measure the aging process, and is a significant factor in disease. Oxidative stress accelerates dramatically as we age, and is very difficult for our bodies to keep up with this ever increasing overload.

Free radicals are the molecules that cause metal to rust or a peeled banana to turn brown. Just as our vehicles emit exhaust as a by-product of the burning of fuel, our cells emit free radicals. When our cells are damaged, our body’s are damaged and chaos and disorder ensue, creating the foundation for disease and accelerated aging. Our body’s are basically, rusting on the inside.

Everyone who breathes air, eats food accumulates free radicals. Sources of oxidative stress go beyond our metabolism, with inflammation, infections, toxins, poor diet, stress, radiation, and excessive exercise all contributing to the free radical fire raging within. Instead of fighting this fire with fire hoses, dietary antioxidants are the equivalent of fighting that fire with enough water to fill a Dixie cup.

The antioxidant craze is well intended, although misguided in many ways. The very idea that consuming high doses of antioxidants through our diets will significantly reduce oxidative stress is an old paradigm backed by disappointing outdated research. Although they do play a positive role in our health, there is no question about that. Yet in terms of neutralizing free radicals, they are far less effective than most would expect.

For years we have been told that consuming high doses of antioxidants such as Vitamin A, C, & E is the best way to fight oxidative stress and prevent disease. Do these antioxidant products really help the body to fight oxidative stress? With more and more research, the response is NO!! Recent scientific research has shown most of this story to be a myth that suggests high doses of antioxidant products, in reality, may be doing our body more harm than good. In fact, one molecule of Vitamin C can only neutralize… one free radical molecule, resulting in the body’s inability to eliminate free radicals and oxidative stress.

The latest science around oxidative stress suggests that conventional antioxidants may actually react with free radicals to cause more free radicals, more oxidative stress, and cause more harm to the body. Ironically, in an effort to battle free radicals and oxidative stress by consuming high doses of antioxidants, many of us have actually made the problem worse.

Modern research, would like us to believe that antioxidant food sources, juices and supplements will make up for the age-related reduction in antioxidant production, but this simply is not possible. On average our bodies produce 300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 free radicals per day, 300sextillion. Remember one antioxidant enzyme can only neutralize a single free radical, a one-to-one ratio! Are we consuming 300 sextillion antioxidants every day, to neutralize that many free radicals? NO!!! You would need to consume the equivalent of the antioxidants found in 375 oranges, 87 glasses of red wine or 120 Vitamin C (500mg) every day, to neutralize that many free radicals.

Our cells were designed to produce antioxidant enzymes. These enzymes include glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. Prior to the age of twenty, our genes instruct our cells to generate tons of these enzymes to neutralize free radicals. Yet, as we enter the third decade of life, enzyme production slows considerably. Just as an older vehicle emits more exhaust, free radical damage accumulates, oxidative stress rises, aging accelerates and disease risk increases.

Dr. McCord and other research experts have established that the most effective way to fight free radicals is to trigger the body to produce more of its own free radical-fighting enzymes.
