The holidays are a time of celebration, giving thanks, and spending time with loved ones. As grandparents, you want to make the most of these times with your grandchildren. There are many ways to enjoy these special times, so why not plan an activity that everyone can enjoy for years to come?

Holiday crafts are a great way to spend quality time with your grandkids as you make something you both will treasure. There are a variety of craft options, depending on the children’s ages, so plan some holiday crafts and make some new memories to cherish.

1. Make a Family Scrapbook

Sit down with your grandchildren to pick out some of your favorite family photos that have been taken throughout the year. Get the photos printed, then spend the day making a fun scrapbook and reminiscing about all the funs times you’ve had together.

2. Create a Family Cookbook

Collect family recipes, especially holiday ones, and create a family cookbook. As you gather the recipes, pick out a few to teach your grandchildren. Everyone will enjoy baking holiday cookies, learning a new side dish, or finding out what goes into the family Christmas punch. You can even make copies of the cookbook to give out as presents!

3. Make Reindeer Thumbprint Cards

Instead of buying Christmas cards at the store, make them with your grandchildren! Purchase some good paper, paint, googly eyes, and little pom poms. Have your grandkids dip their thumbs in the paint and make thumbprints for the reindeer faces. Then paint on horns and attach the google eyes and a pom pom for the eyes and nose. You could also make a full reindeer with a thumbprint face and body, and have your grandchildren add the legs and tail as well.

4. Put Together Care Packages

If you’re interested in crafts that will help others, you and your grandchildren can put together care packages for soldiers deployed overseas. Include items like socks, hand lotion, twizzlers and heat-resistant candy, pens/pencils, writing paper, envelopes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, instant oatmeal, granola bars, playing cards, crossword puzzle and sudoku books, socks, batteries, and more. Have each grandchild write a personal note to include as well. You can send the care package through an organization like Operation Shoebox.

5. Craft a Custom Calendar for the New Year

Spend an afternoon having your grandchildren draw a collection of pictures. Tell them to let their imaginations run wild and enjoy the images they come up with. Once the drawings are complete, pick your favorite 12 of the bunch and create a custom calendar. You can have this made for your own home, or have a bunch made to give out to family members as gifts.

6. Write Your Own Holiday Story

There are so many holiday stories out there, so why not add one more? Get your creativity flowing by writing a holiday story with your grandkids. Get a blank notebook or journal and write down the story as you make it up. Have your grandkids do the illustrations. Then you’ll have a one-of-a-kind story to read every year.
