Wearing Long Hair at Any Age!

While you may not have visions of glorious teen tresses running through your head, you may still want to enjoy longer hair. The good news is longer hair styles do not have an expiration date and we can still enjoy lengthy locks as we age. But if you want to make long hair really work for you, there are a few things to consider before you spend the time getting to your goal.

Long hair has similar parameters to the hemline of a skirt. At a certain age (which is truly up to you and how you feel) it is wise to look at the length of the hair as you would your wardrobe. Does it still fit who you are and the image you wish to portray?

As with hemlines, the length of your hair should not only flatter your body image but also suit your moods and lifestyle. While long hair does offer the benefit of transformation from a loosely pinned, slightly messy, heavenly attractive up-do, to the flowing locks that are great for a walk along the beach, there is also too long.

If you are a free spirit and still have waist-length hair left over from Woodstock, you probably do not care what I have to say anyhow, but from a fashion standpoint, here are a few ageless ideas.

  • A length for your hair that falls at your collar bone (at its longest) will work best. As we age we gain those tiny lines in our faces and necks that can be exaggerated by framing them with long hair. So if you choose to have hair of this length then use the art of distraction to correct and compliment.
  • Think about bangs and choose a few soft wisps or a subtle angle that helps conceal those forehead lines. Soft bangs not only accentuate the eyes but they can also re-proportion the face shape. Ask your stylist what would work best for you!
  • Adding a soft frame of layers to the perimeter will soften the style so it does not appear as though you are peeking through a curtain. This adds bounce, movement, and volume as well as a feminine flair. It will also help if you are a fan of adding soft waves or curl to your hair.
  • Color and shine are then high on the list for youthful looking, longer hair. Get the ends trimmed every month so no dull tips will spoil the glossy finish. Use a good conditioner and learn how to blow dry like the pros. (always blow down the hair shaft to achieve maximum sheen) A rich new color tone works magic so discuss nuances with your stylist or try a few highlights around your face.

So no, we do not need to give up long hair. It simply comes down to tailoring your long hair to fit you and your lifestyle. Flirty and feminine, sophisticated or sporty, it’s your hair, enjoy!

  1. Thank you Carol! I just turned 50, and have let my silver hair grow in, and wear it long. I am inspired to know that I am not the only one who likes this look after the age of 40, and that I can continue to do so into my 60’s+! Flirty & feminine for me 😉

    1. It’s nice to hear from you Lisa and to know you are happy with your hair. We know now that silver hair can look wonderful a little longer because as it moves it really shows off the shine. A good healthy condition and great shape are all you need to maintain. An enviable position!

  2. Ah, Carol, I struggle with this all the time. I used to wear my hair longer, but it does tend to pull my face down, so now it’s an in-between length. And I have bangs which help as I have a high forehead. I’d love to be able to wear it up, but I cannot have it that long. So all in all I am grateful that I still HAVE HAIR!!
