Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Joshua 4:4-9. Memorials are built with experience and memories. They are symbolic of a season, a time where we either in a desert place or one with bountiful blessings.
“So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, 5 and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6 to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 7 tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”
8 So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord had told Joshua; and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down. 9 Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been[a] in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.”
A stone for every accomplishment
As Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan into the promised land, God’s people stood on the verge of seeing generations of promises fulfilled. They were the generation that would see the hand of God give what the forefathers had waited for.
The disciples that were chosen by Jesus got to see and walk with their creator. They saw great miracles like never seen before and were able to sit at the feet of the great teacher and learn. Like the Israelites entering the promised land, the disciples lived in a very special time.
In both situations, we have memorials pointing towards God’s faithfulness. Looking back, we can see the importance of those times. Do you think that they comprehended or understood what was happening right there among them?
Perhaps we are living in a time that is as important and significant for God’s story! We may never understand it, but we can be sure of God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises and word. Let us build physical and mental memorials to remember the actions of God each and every day!
Let’s Pray
Dear Father,
Thank you that You have been faithful throughout the generations. I am excited that You will always bring Your plans and promises about. I surrender my efforts to Your plans and will, knowing that You are worthy of the trust.
In Jesus Name,
Amen
