Your hair has managed to survive summer and fall, but now it’s time for the real challenge: winter. Cold weather brings its own hair difficulties (i.e., dryness), which manifest in a variety of unsightly ways, including static, split ends and dullness. It’s not a pretty picture, but luckily, there are a few easy tricks for keeping your hair tamed this season.

Winter Hair Care Tip 1: Skip the shampoo.

No matter how often you wash your hair, add an extra day of rest between cleansing. Simply rinse locks and hydrate ends with an uber-conditioner.

Winter Hair Care Tip 2: Beat the heat.

Most styling tools work because they apply high temps to your hair. And frankly, most cuts need some sort of styling to fall into place. Minimize damage from dryers and irons by first applying a styling product with protective silicone coating. Also, work in sections to give strands time to cool off before restyling.

Winter Hair Care Tip 3: Fight frizz.

Most experts recommend finishing sprays to keep flyaways at bay. In a pinch, you can also use dryer sheets or a drop or two or conditioning oil. Also, try switching to a leave-in conditioner post-shampoo. It can hydrate and coat the cuticle to prevent splitting.

Winter Hair Care Tip 4: Switch to volumizers.

Cold weather can zap the life from your hair. Add some oomph with shampoos and conditioners that promise fullness, lift and volume.

Winter Hair Care Tip 5: Shine on.

Fake strong, hydrated locks with just a drop or two of shine product. Hair looks healthy when you apply it before or after styling.
