With the New Year now well in swing, you’ve probably already been toying with the idea of making a few changes to your lifestyle for health benefits. As we get older, it becomes increasingly important to listen to our bodies for clues to what strains we are putting on them. It also becomes more difficult to fight off illnesses and to recover from injuries, so we need to be more conscious of what our body needs than ever before.

You don’t have to suddenly take up marathon running or condemn yourself to a rabbit food diet but there are some simple ways that you can make small changes that can result in big differences.

Do some moderate exercise

You don’t have to join a gym or become a fitness fanatic but if you can work some extra exercise into your day then you will soon start to see the benefits. Simply walking to the shops instead of getting in the car or taking a short walk in your lunchtime or take the grandchildren out for a walk. As well as helping with weight loss and blood pressure, you will get the added benefit of additional sunlight to get some much-needed Vitamin D.

Socialize more

Reports show that socializing has an important impact on your mental wellbeing and you should always make time to keep up with old friends or find new ones. A great way of meeting new people is to join a group or class of likeminded people who have similar interests as you. Have you thought about learning a new language, joining a fitness class or a golf club? All of these a great ways to both meet new people and keep you busy and active.

Eat well

Your diet is one of the key contributors to your health, so you should spend time to analyze your diet and see if you need to make any changes. To ensure a healthy, balanced diet, follow the recommended intakes. Be more aware of your portion sizes by measuring your ingredients and maybe even keep a food diary so that you can keep track of your intake. You might be very surprised when you realize what foods are and aren’t good for you or what a good portion size really is.

Hydrate often

Dehydration causes a number of problems from headaches to bad skin. By keeping a regular intake of fluids, you will be helping your body in many ways. Dehydration can often lead to painful Urinary Tract Infections, which are particularly common for women, so to avoid UTI Treatment, keep well hydrated by drinking regularly.

Keep your brain active

Like lots of parts of your body, inactivity can lead to loss or slowness. Keep your brain in great shape by doing mental puzzles and games that keep your brain working, as it is easy to slip into the habit of everyday relaxation with no real mental stimulation. Even ten minutes doing a Sudoko puzzle can really help.
