Start Your Online Business After 50!

7 Reasons Why 50 and Beyond Is The Perfect Age to Start Your Online Business…

Let’s debunk a few myths straight away. No, it is absolutely not too late. Yes, you totally have
what it takes to launch your own business. And, yes, you can easily master the technology
‘stuff’. It’s not nearly as complex as some of the gurus (who want to sell you stuff) make it out to
be.

Ok, so now that we’ve busted the myths, let’s get to why 50 and beyond is the best time to start
your online business.

fall scents for your home

1.) You’ve Got Game
It’s a given that if you’ve hit the big 5–0 and beyond you’ve got serious skills. You have life
smarts, street smarts, people smarts, book smarts, financial smarts, productivity smarts,
organizational smarts and business smarts, even if you’ve never ‘worked’ in business.

It’s impossible to have lived through the decades without acquiring these real-world skills.
You’re solid. You’ve perfected the art of catching life’s curve balls. You’ve lived through ups and
downs and highs and lows. And, you’re still standing.

Go You! You were made for entrepreneurship. Having your own business can be a roller coaster
ride (but an incredibly fun one) so being steady during the ups and downs will serve you well in
your business.

2.) You Know Yourself
By this time in life, you know what you love to do. You know what you excel at and you know
what you don’t like, which is equally important (so you can avoid it altogether).

It’s clear where your heart is, what piques your interest and what you think about in the middle of
the night when you can’t sleep.

Getting to the right business idea is not nearly as simple as many would think. But, because you
know what you want, you’re already on the right path to choosing your ideal business idea to run
with.

Having this type of clarity is half the battle.

3.) It’s your turn.
If you’re like most women, you’ve spent a good part of your life ‘taking care of’ other people and
things. We take care of our children, our homes, our husbands, our jobs, our gardens, our pets,
our communities, our parents and more. ‘Taking care of others’ is a natural part of our lives.

But, once you hit 50 and beyond there’s a shift. The people and things you’ve looked after don’t
necessarily need as much of you. You get to ‘take care of yourself’.

You’ve also likely started having the ‘what the heck moments’ where you begin raising the big
philosophical questions like ‘why am I here’ and ‘what’s my purpose’.

The opportunity is here right now to find your purpose. You can start any business you can
imagine today. The sky’s the only limit.

Have you dreamt of selling your art? You can do it. Have you dreamt of having a part-time
bookkeeping business? Of course, you can do it. Have you dreamt of writing for a living? Do it.
Want to sell your amazing barbecue sauce? Go for it. Teach Spanish online? Uno, dos, tres…

4.) The Rules Have Changed
There no such thing as a typical business person or business model any more. You don’t have to
have an office or employees. You can work virtually and have virtual team members. You don’t
have to wear blue suits. You can work in your jeans, in your kitchen.

The business world today is simply what you make it.

Do you want to work full-time, or do you want to work 7 months of the year? Do you want to work
three mornings a week or work from another country? You make your model and you set your
schedule. You’re in complete control.

5.) Few Barriers
Unless you want to build a mega software company or develop some complex product, there are
virtually no barriers to entry. If you have a laptop, an internet connect, a passion for something
and know-how to do it, you’re good to go.

You don’t need to break through any glass ceilings or overcome ageism or stereotype issues.
You’re the boss when you start your own business. You choose your own title and make up your
own job description.

6.) You’ve Got Time
We’re living much longer and we’re younger than our parents were at our age. We could easily
have 10 – 20 – 30 – 40 years ahead of us. How are you going to spend your time? Making
origami? Eventually, you’ll become so good at making paper cranes you’ll want to sell it. And,
boom, there you are. You’re an entrepreneur.

All kidding aside, you have lots of time ahead of you. There’s plenty of time to build your
business.

7.) You Owe It to Others
When you start your own business you get to act on what you most love and what you’re best at
doing. It’s an amazing combination that you can and should share with the world. There are
people who need what you have to offer, whether it’s for fun or something more serious.

Younger women need you, too. Your willingness to bring your talents and business to the world
will serve as a role model.

This isn’t a dress rehearsal (yes, an awful, but poignant cliché). This is your prime time. All the
pieces are right there just waiting for you to assemble them. The only question is what business
do you want to launch?

    1. I love this empowering message, too! So inspirational, aspirational and just good sense. Let’s hear it for women who actually do something about social injustice instead writing about DWTS. Yay for middle aged women who walk the talk and not just talk.

  1. I’m 53, quit my high paying (and extremely stressful and exhausting) job and am embarking on a business online. I feel free and in charge of my own life. Thanks for the info. The sky is the limit.
