In today’s day and age, with so many unhealthy yet tasty treats available to us, maintaining a healthy lifestyle has, for many, become more of a chore than a habit. This has led to all kinds of different problems – just take a look at the national obesity rate – with an alarmingly increasing number of people lacking the willpower to practice healthy habits as often as possible. But, your health is important – after all, how you feel and how well you are overall can have a huge effect on things such as your work life and career, education, family life, and even your mood! If you’re desperate to start leading a healthier lifestyle and aren’t sure where to start, we’ve got some great tips to get you going.

Shun the Crash Diets

If you want to lead a healthier lifestyle, crash diets aren’t for you. Crash diets such as meal replacement shakes, obsessive and restrictive calorie counting, strict diet plans and dietary supplements are all often the absolute opposite of healthy. Although all of these methods can cause you to lose weight quickly, they also come with their fair share of problems which are not suitable for the long-term. Crash diets are often used by so-called ‘yo-yo’ dieters – although they can certainly help you lose the extra pounds, your body loses the weight far too quickly, meaning that you’ll start putting it all back on once you’ve finished the diet. Instead, focus on becoming healthier overall, rather than simply on losing weight. You can detox your body with green juices, helping to remove excess toxins from your body which in turn leads to benefits such as better energy levels and loss of extra weight.

Stay Hydrated

Your body absolutely needs water in order to remain healthy. If you’re looking to adopt good health habits for life and want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, keeping yourself hydrated with plenty of water is essential. When you’re drinking enough water – ideally around two liters a day – you will feel much more energized, snack less due to feeling fuller, have better skin, healthier hair and nails, and much more. Drinking more water isn’t a difficult habit to get into, either – start small by swapping one or two coffees, soft drinks or soda a day for water instead and you’ll soon get used to drinking it. If you don’t like the taste – or lack of taste – of water, try drinking it with a slice of lemon.

Cook from Scratch

Convenience meals and processed foods may have made it easier for us to get to the dinner table quicker and spend less time slaving over a hot stove, but they’re not doing any good to your overall health or in many cases, your waistline. Even ready meals and other processed foods which are labelled as ‘healthy’ or ‘light’ can be packed with hidden unhealthy ingredients, additives and toxins which will not do your body any good. Instead of relying on convenience food to make sure that you eat, it’s a great idea to start cooking your own, healthy meals from scratch as often as possible. If you don’t have much cooking experience, try taking a cookery class or two to boost your confidence!

Don’t Restrict Yourself

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when trying to adapt a healthier lifestyle is having very unrealistic expectations of themselves. It would be great if you could live the rest of your life surviving on only organic fruit and veg, lean protein, whole-grains and water – but you can’t, and you shouldn’t try to, either. Being overly restrictive and making certain foods ‘out of bounds’ when you are aiming for a healthier diet can actually hinder you more than it can help. Instead, you should always allow the odd treat – a little bit of what you fancy can actually do you good – but keep moderation in mind at all times. Allowing for one ‘treat day’ each week or fortnight, or simply having one small treat every day or couple of days can help to keep you on track and give you a better chance of changing your lifestyle for good.

Adopting healthy habits shouldn’t be seen as a short term fix, but rather as a long term lifestyle change leading to a better, healthier you!
