We’ve all been there. On December 31, you dream up your resolutions for the New Year. You wake up on January 1, excited to pursue your goals for the year. You stay strong for a few weeks, but then life gets in the way. Before you know it, your resolutions have once again fallen by the wayside.

When this happens, you might decide to just throw in the towel and declare that your resolutions have failed. But this doesn’t have to be the case. It’s natural to get off track sometimes while working towards a goal. We have a tendency to be overly critical of ourselves and beat ourselves up if we have a slip during our journey. But you don’t need to be hard on yourself for not being perfect every single day. Remember that if you give it your best, that’s all you can ask of yourself.

If you’re determined to keep your resolutions going strong past January this year, we’ve got some tips to help you stay the course, whether it’s getting in shape, improving your finances, becoming more adventurous or any other goal.

Surround Yourself with Positive Influences

Working toward a big goal may seem impossible at times, and you might be wondering how you’ll ever be able to fulfill your resolution. A wonderful way to counter these thoughts is to find people who have achieved a similar goal. Connecting with like-minded individuals and hearing success stories will keep you inspired and increase your confidence. It also brings a sense of familiarity to your resolution because you’ll realize that if someone else can achieve that goal, you can too.

Set Smaller Goals

New Year’s resolutions are often grand declarations. It could be a significant amount of weight you want to lose, how much money you plan to save or even a foreign country you’d like to visit. Announcing a big goal is exciting, but the enormity of it may feel overwhelming. Instead of looking at the big picture, break your resolution down into smaller, more manageable goals. For example, if you want to lose 70 pounds this year, start with a goal to lose 10 pounds. If you want to visit a foreign country, start by learning the basics of the language. This will seem much more attainable. When you reach that goal, you’ll feel great and want to keep going. Positively reward yourself along the way. Maybe you treat yourself to a massage when you lose 25 pounds, or you cook yourself a delicious homemade meal when you save your first $500. Achieving small goals and associating these improvements with positivity will keep you on the right path.

Rely on Repetition

Don’t let your resolution sit in a drawer to be forgotten. Instead, write your resolution and words of encouragement on sticky notes and post them all around your house. Repeat your goals to yourself each day as well as what you’ve achieved so far. Reminding yourself why you’re working on this resolution and keeping it in the forefront of your mind will be especially helpful if you have doubts or start to fumble.

Plan for Setbacks

It’s okay to not be perfect. No one is. Working toward a goal won’t be perfect either. The key is to remember that life gets messy and to not stress when you encounter a setback. Sometimes the temptation is too strong, and you give in. This doesn’t mean you failed. Remember that it’s normal to stumble. When you do have a setback, give yourself some time to sit and think about why it happened and what you can do differently next time. Not only will you feel better about working toward your goal, you’ll become stronger and more resilient as a person.

Be Accountable

If you’re serious about sticking to your resolution this year, you shouldn’t go it alone. You can recruit a friend or family member to join you, or simply let your support system know of your plans for the year. Your loved ones want you to succeed and they will help keep you accountable. They’ll be happy to share in your journey and discuss your struggles and successes. Talking about your plans with your friends and family keeps your mind focused.
