Get Out to Get Up

By Sharon Brani –

One effective way to increase energy and motivation is to get out in the sun.

Even if you live in one of those areas with gray skies for much of the year, getting outside every day not only can give you a vitamin D boost but also will improve your mood and energy.

Although I have noticed in the past that time spent outside boosts my mood, I decided to try it again yesterday. My workload had been heavy lately. Deadlines and pressures had left me drained. But the colorful leaves and smells of autumn beckoned to me. So I grabbed my cocker spaniel and my two daughters and together we drove to the nearby park.

Even as I pulled the car to a stop and glanced around my heart beat with excitement. It was a magnificent day. The blues of the sky combining with the oranges, reds and yellows of the trees made it a feast to behold. Immediately everyone bounded out of the car. My cocker with her big ears flopping raced on ahead chasing the birds. I followed behind carrying my camera and gazing all around.

I admired the reflections in the lake and the sounds of the geese overhead. I listened as the leaves rained down with every breeze that blew. Autumn at its best. As I gazed around drinking in the beauty I noticed a remarkable change within myself.

The stress from the previous week seemed to disappear. I felt lighter. Happier. More carefree. More alive. This was just the boost I needed. Why had I waited so long to come out here? I must not let that happen again.

Yes, research has shown that 10 -15 minutes outside every day energizes. A mid-day bike ride, a noon run, an early morning power walk around the block. The important part is to get outside. How ever you can build it into your day, you will feel the difference.

We all live busy lives but let’s push away from the screens and get away from the voice mails. Let’s make it part of our daily lives to get outside. Let’s be intentional.

That one habit can change our lives. I plan to do it.

I don’t know about you but I’ve already had my morning walk. Now I’m ready for the day. Won’t you join me. You will accomplish so much more if you do.

Yes, let’s get out to get up. Have you had your boost today?
