If you are in your 50’s and looking for a new hobby, why not try fishing?  Fishing is a great pastime, and it’s an affordable hobby that is easy to start. Today, we are going to learn more about why fishing is great for those over 50 and why you should give it a try.

It’s Very Affordable

Fishing is one of those hobbies that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to get started with.  For a hundred dollars or less, you can purchase a fishing rod, some hooks and sinkers, a tackle box and some bait. With these items, you can have a really fun time trying to catch your fish. There are many places online that you can purchase these items including woodburyoutfitters.com.  Also, don’t forget to purchase a fishing license so that you won’t get a ticket for fishing without one.  While you could spend some more money and buy yourself a boat, it’s not necessary.  You can find many places to fish including fishing docks, along bank sides, on a river or at your local lake.

It Will Keep You Active

To stay fit and healthy, you will need to stay active and what better way to do so than fishing?  Fishing provides light to medium exercise which is great for you!  Many people in their 50’s take up the sport of fishing, and it helps to keep them young. If you would like to lose some weight, fishing can help you do that as well. By walking around the banks and reeling in your catch, you can burn a lot of calories. Fishing could be part of your overall healthy living plan, and you can go a few times a week.  This will help get you off the sofa and out into nature.  Studies have shown that being out in nature has healthy benefits as well.

You Will Have Lots of Healthy Fish to Eat

Not only is fishing a great exercise, but it will also provide you with an endless supply of fresh fish too.  As you already know, fish is a healthy food that will provide you with vital nutrients. Fish is a good replacement for chicken, as it is full of protein. Although fish is good for you, it needs to be a limited part of your diet. Eating too much fish can cause mercury build-up in the body, but this depends on the type of fish you are eating and where you catch it. Freshwater and saltwater fish can contain mercury so make sure you do your research before you eat the fish you catch.  You may want to contact your states’ department of natural resources to get this information.

As you can see, there is a lot of benefits that fishing can provide.  Not only will fishing get you out of the house, but it will also provide you with lots of fresh, healthy fish to eat.  So, if you are over 50 and looking for a new hobby, why not try your hand at this age-old pastime?  You just might be surprised at how fun it can be!

  1. I hate fall. The only Fall I loved was the one we fished every weekend. So it’s great for your mental health, too!

It’s wonderful to know that it doesn’t cost a hundred dollars to start fishing as a hobby. I suppose I should get a fishing charter to help me out in looking for a spot to start with. My father wishes to start a new hobby with me that we can do in our free time, so this might be something that he can start with me.

  3. So weird. I was just searching for information about this stuff and you popped up. You must be doing something right. Thanks by the way, this really answered some questions I was wondering about.
