Dresses are a great clothing choice because not only are they stylish, but they’re versatile as well. In the summer, dresses make a great alternative to pants or shorts when the weather is warm. Dresses can be worn to work or worn for a night on the town. Whether you’re dressing it up or dressing it down, dresses are a comfortable, cute option for almost any occasion.

That being said, there are certainly a lot of styles to choose from. With multiple lengths, necklines, sleeve lengths, and more, you might be wondering which is the best choice for you. That’s why we’re breaking down the options to help you know what best dress styles are best for different body types, so you can look and feel your most confident.

Body Types

  • Pear Body Shape: This means you have a triangular shape with narrow shoulders and wider hips.
  • Apple Body Shape: The apple shape, or the inverted triangle, means your well-proportioned, your shoulders are a bit wider than your hips, and your waist isn’t as defined.
  • Hourglass Body Shape: The hourglass shape is seen on curvy women who have a smaller waist, but wider shoulders and hips.
  • Athletic Body Shape: This is also known as a square shape. Your shoulders and hips are about equal widths, and your waist is less defined and more straight up and down.

  • A-Line: A-line dresses are more fitted and the top and flow out to the hem, creating a silhouette that resembles the capital letter A. This dress type works well for all body tops. For example, women with an apple shape will look great in an A-line dress with wide straps, as this dress type pulls focus away from the midsection, while a woman with a pear shape may prefer a halter neckline.

  • Empire: The empire dress type is another classic. The bodice fits to your body to just under the bustline, providing a high waistline, and flows out from there to the hem. A woman with a triangle shape who wants to create more definition can benefit from this higher waistline. Women with triangle shapes can also wear this dress type, as it helps your legs seem longer and leaner.
  • Off-the-Shoulder: This type of dress is great for nights out and when you want to look more dressed up. Off-the-shoulder dresses accentuate an hourglass figure, and they can also create more of a waistline for women with athletic figures.

  • Shift: Shift, or sheath, dresses are recognizable by their design that falls to just below the knee. These dresses work or all body types, but it’s important to choose a complementary shoulder and sleeve length. You also want to make sure it fits properly, or else it can look a bit boxy.

  • Wrap: The wrap dress is another classic silhouette. This is another dress option that’s versatile, goes from day to night, and looks good on everyone. That’s because the waistline is adjustable, and you can tie the wrap wherever it feels most comfortable.

Now that you know more about the different body types and which dresses best suit them, you can shop with confidence and really stand out at your next work meeting, fun outing, date, or dinner with family.
