Daily Devotional – Thankful for Salvation

Daily Devotional

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from Jonah 2:4-9. Should you need clarification, finding yourself in the belly of a whale deems you in need of saving. Having never found myself in such a predicament, I wouldn’t have any suggestion on how to get out of that.

“I said, ‘I have been banished
    from your sight;
yet I will look again
    toward your holy temple.’
The engulfing waters threatened me,[b]
    the deep surrounded me;
    seaweed was wrapped around my head.
To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
    the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God,
    brought my life up from the pit.

“When my life was ebbing away,
    I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
    to your holy temple.

“Those who cling to worthless idols
    turn away from God’s love for them.
But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
    will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
    I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”

Sometimes it is easier to cry out for saving

We can all agree that an act of God was necessary for Jonah to live another day. Having been thrown from the boat in haste to save the boat and all of the fishermen, Jonah certainly didn’t have his scout’s nag of knives and tools. It was a hopeless situation where he faced a challenge greater than anything he could overcome on his own.

It is sometimes harder to place our faith and hope in the hands of God over a simple meal. For any of us in the United States, we can not imagine that an act of God is what stands between us and starvation. Some people do, but the concern for me is that we have become so self-dependent that we sometimes forget how dependent we truly are on God for everything!

Let us strengthen our faith and courage by reaffirming all the ways in which He works. Let us be thankful for our salvation and every little or big blessing!

Let’s Pray

Dear Father,

Forgive me for sometimes overlooking Your great works and miracles. You have provided in so many ways, and I give thanksgiving to You today for all that You have done!

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen
