Daily Devotional – Abiding in The Tree of Life

Our scripture for the Daily Devotional today is taken from John 15: 1-12When we abide in Jesus we have a direct connection to the nutrients of the Vine. As part of the vine, the fruit will be produced through us because of the connection to the vine. What does a tree do to produce the fruits?

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”

An apple tree produces apples and not oranges because it is an apple tree. As crazy as it sounds, an apple tree can and will never produce oranges. You can try giving the apple tree special fertilizer or treatment, however, the apple tree will continue to produce apples.

If we are connected to the vine of Jesus with the indwelling of God’s Spirit, then the fruits of the spirit will be evident in our lives. Like the apple tree produces apples, the fruit produced by us will be that of God. There is nothing that anyone can do to have us produce fruit contrary to that of God’s Spirit.

Fruit is being produced by all of us. Those around us that we meet and live life with are getting to taste and see it.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. I am grateful that I do not need to work at my fruits, but that they are produced by my constant abiding in your presence. Lead and guide me so that the fruit of my life bring your life and love to all of those around me.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
