While most women of a certain age have their own signature style, the new year is the perfect time to add a few key pieces to update any closet. We consulted with fashion stylist Josephine Lalwan, whose blog Chic At Any Age helps women create a modern look while adhering to their own personal style. Here are her top fashion tips to help you create your best look this year:

  1. Go for glitter. “A touch of sparkle or glitter in moderation can be very flattering,” Lalwan says. Get the look without going overboard by investing in a sparkled statement piece, like this glitter color block boxed clutch by Tasha ($78; nordstrom.com).

  1. Consider color carefully. “The pastel colors in the 2016 Pantone chart need to be worn carefully or they can look a bit ‘old lady,’ especially the rose quartz and serenity blue,” Lalwan cautions. “Wear as an accent color or team with dark neutrals.” She adds that brighter colors compliment mature skin tones best.
  1. Add stripes. Perfect for mature women, stripes are on point this year and Lalwan recommends looking for the perfect top to add to your closet. We like the striped jacket featured in the image above on woman outside of John Richmond Fashion Show Building For Milan Men’s Fashion Week, and this striped boat neck tunic by J Crew ($55; jcrew.com).
  1. Think lingerie. Add a lacy camisole under a tailored jacket for a sophisticated look that incorporates the lingerie trend, suggests Lalwan. Try this lacy rose camisole by Josie Natori ($150; natori.com).

  1. Suede style. “Suede continues to be fashionable from last year and jackets and waistcoats in this fabric can look good on older women,” Lalwan says. We love this belted faux suede jacket by Vince Camuto ($178; nordstrom.com).

  1. Add lightweight denim. A jean skirt makes a good choice for warmer spring or summer days this year, according to Lalwan. This skirt from J Crew is the perfect length ($110; jcrew.com).
  1. Wear flats. Pair your denim skirt with comfortable flats this year, like these classic ballet flats ($135; jcrew.com).

  1. Find the right accessory. Instantly update your look by adding the right trend accessory. Lalwan recommends a bag with chains or a piece of chain jewelry, like these draped chain earrings by gorjana ($55; nordstrom.com).

Whether your individual style is vintage, bohemian, classic, or simple, these subtle updates can bring your look into the new year. Above all, Lalwan encourages women to express their own sense of taste and style.

“I would say that many older women are definitely beginning to break the old rules and wear what they want,” Lalwan says. “Some are creating their own trends rather than following what fashion dictates.”
