I have Addison’s disease, asthma, hypoglycemia, scoliosis, and a cyst on my brain. Sometimes I am at a certain level of stability with my illnesses, sometimes I am not. During those seasons I am not, I have to deal with extra symptoms and try to figure out which illness is causing it and what, if anything, I can do about them.

I’ve spent years learning to live with and adapt to illness, so when the usual symptoms come, most of the time I know what to do. That morning, however, was during one of those unstable seasons. I woke up to strange, unexpected symptoms, and to be honest, those are the ones that scare me. I don’t know what they mean, I don’t know what to do, and if I’m really honest I fear not figuring it out until it’s too late.
If you have a chronic illness that can get dangerous, you know that people with disease tend to think about death more than most. When you’re lying in an MRI machine with fluid on your brain and several doctors discussing which life-threatening treatment to risk on you (which did happen to me once), it inspires you to ponder the very real truth that all of us are going to die, and none of know when.
I try not to be fearful, but days like that day, I struggle. As I got ready for church that morning, I thought of the children in my family and the future for them if I were to die. I realized something important. I have multiple books that I would leave behind with their message of hope for adults, but my children would have nothing to hold in their hands that would remind them how much I loved them.
We got to church and I cried through Sunday School, scribbling away on a notebook. (The teacher may have thought he was really getting through to me that day, but I have no idea what he said!) By the end of church that day, I had the words that became When I’m With Jesus. Not long after that, God had me meet the woman who illustrated the book, and her paintings are just perfect for it.
Already, weeks before its release, I am hearing from people who have been touched by its message of hope and love. I am amazed and humbled that God is using something that started with me crying all over myself and struggling with fear. Only He can do that!
