Soothing Achy Muscles and Joints

By Susan Smith Jones, PhD –

Our musculoskeletal system is truly a thing of wonder. Our bones and muscles working in concert allow us to perform everything from the most grand of movements — like a ballerina leaping across the stage — to the most intricate — like a surgeon operating on the brain. Bones give our bodies their upright form, serve as armor for our delicate internal organs, and are the site of red and white blood cell production as well as a storehouse of calcium. Muscles give our bodies definition, supply our strength, and coordinate our lungs and heart. Without them, our bones couldn’t really move us anywhere.

To facilitate this immensely important partnership between our muscles and bones, several other key parts of the musculoskeletal system come into play. Joints are found where two bones meet and allow movement at those points (e.g. the hinge joint of your knee or the “ball and socket” joints of your shoulder or hip). Ligaments hold bones together, while tendons attach muscles to bones. There is also built-in “shock absorption” that comes from your cartilage, a cushioning material attached to the ends of bones, and your bursae, fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction between your tendons and bones.

One of the most amazing things about muscles and bones is that they aren’t static entities — they are living tissues capable of changing and repairing themselves. Children are born with about 300 bones, yet many of these fuse together as we grow; adults have 206 total bones. During our formative years, our bones increase in size and strength, which we can see as children grow to their full height. Likewise, we know that muscles increase in size and strength through maturation and through active use. We need only to look at bodybuilders to know that muscles can grow significantly when engaged in strenuous physical activity.

Our muscles and joints benefit from the right amount of physical challenge. We must keep our joints in good use through stretching and strength training in order to preserve our range of motion. Muscles atrophy when unused. Experts equate just 10 days of relative immobility (like being confined to a hospital bed) with 5-10 years of aging! Exercise is the key to strong muscles; it is estimated that the average American loses half a pound of muscle mass each year due to inadequate physical activity.

Muscles and joints can be troublesome year-round, at any age, and there are myriad causes for this.  Some people’s joints and muscles ache more in cold weather. If your abdominal muscles are weak, it’s easy to get low back pain. Even an old, saggy mattress can cause back and joint pain. Renewing an exercise program or engaging in a sports activity after some time off can cause muscle and joint pain. Exercising longer than usual can aggravate both, and even going on vacation where you are walking more than customary can cause discomfort to muscles and joints.

So what can we do to soothe and assuage achy muscles and joints whether at home or traveling, a natural remedy that’s efficacious and easy to use.
