Fun Summer Hairstyles for Women Over 50

By Carol Doyel –

I think most of us enjoy the longer, warmer days of summer. Over the years I have found that one of the things that makes me feel “lighter” and cooler in the warmer months is a shorter hairstyle. A fabulous cut that gives me lots of bounce – The perfect summer look.

Although today, it seems that more women over 50 are wearing their hair long and choosing to go with their natural hair color versus covering grey tones with color, which looks great on certain women. I, on the other-hand, cannot get away with wearing my hair long or natural.

It seems that when my hair gets a certain length, given my fine hair, it just doesn’t look healthy – unlike the women in the photos below who can wear long hair and look great. One photo is of a dear 50+ friend of mine, who is not a celebrity, yet looks just as fabulous as Cindy Joseph without good camera work or Photoshop.

However, if you are like many women who begin experiencing changes in their hair texture as they age, or if you were born with fine hair, you will need to make sure you take your hair type into consideration when deciding on a hairstyle. For fine hair I recommend a chin length style, without too much layering for a healthy – bouncy look. I’ve included two personal photos of me below as an example; one of me with chin length hair and the other shorter, behind the ears style (again, using amateur photos to show you that you too can get a similar look).

Unfortunately, the short-short styles may not be the best option for women with rounder – less defined faces, given the emphasis on facial features. For those who have good bone structure and eyes that tend to be large with good brows, like Helen Mirren below, the shorter styles can look great regardless of age.

The key to a great hairstyle is to first find a good hair-stylist, note that I said “stylist” because to get a fabulous cut you have to start by finding the best stylist you can afford. Do not go cheap! Often the cut is more important than the perfect color or highlighting. A good cut goes a long way. Don’t make the mistake of getting a $19.95 cut – or going to a stylist you don’t know or who is not recommended by someone you know. Take the time to ask friends or women you meet who have great styles, don’t be embarrassed to ask them for the name of their stylist.

It’s also important to invest in good hair-products and treatments. I’ve learned the hard way, cheap haircare products have ingredients that do not feed the hair but rather strip and damage it. You wouldn’t eat chemicals would you? Why put damaging chemicals on your hair? I recommend you find a professional product line for your hair type. I have always loved Aveda products. For fine hair, check out their newest thickening product – Thickening Tonic.

Fun Summer HairstylesIf you have trouble deciding which products to use, you can always consult your hairstylist. The advice of a well-trained, professional who is current on haircutting techniques and products is a great source for recommended products. If you live in or are planning to visit Toronto this summer, check out the Uptown Spa – a hair salon in Toronto where you can find a great stylist and hair-care products. They also offer an array of hair treatments (as well as other skincare treatments), which I highly recommend we all do from time-to-time to feed and restore our locks.

I have found over the years, less is more – The less you have to fuss, color, curl, and blow dry your hair the better your hair will look as you age. Also, if you want healthy hair it’s important to eat well, take some good supplements, exercise, drink lots of water, get plenty of rest, and avoid extended stress. Unhealthy hair, skin, and nails are often one of the first signs of a more serious underlying health issue.

In ending, I think the best advice I can give you is to find an easy hairstyle that compliments your face shape and that works well for your lifestyle, you’ll be much happier with your hair – long or short this summer and all year long!

  1. Carol, you look fabulous. Thank you for the suggestions on hair styles. I agree, finding a good stylist is indeed the best way to go. Toronto sounds like a good idea, although one in Dallas did me a great favor years ago. Kat Kerr says God gives us the freedom of choice. Maybe at 82 I should try pink? And then, maybe not so as to preserve my marriage.

    1. Oh good to hear from you Lois! And thank you! Yes I want to go to Toronto too and I would go with pink all the way! Bless you!

  2. I am 64 and not a movie star or anyone famous. Since, I have decided to go natural color and natural curls I feel just as beautiful if not more than when I colored and straighten for hours to get the look.
