Our Cord of Hope

Hope

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord,
thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
(Jer. 29:11 NKJV)

Some days, the world hurls its temptations and calamities at us, or the enemy shoots his fiery darts of discouragement and fear at us. Sometimes, we disobey God’s Word and find ourselves in unwanted predicaments. Or we give ourselves to so many projects that we spread ourselves too thin.

Then, there are days when all of the above bombards us at once. And we end up wearied, worn out; our faith and hope wane.

Times are scary. Tiresome. Heartbreaking. Making our spirits sag.

But we are not “as those are who have no hope.” (1 Thess. 4:13 TLB)

We may grow weary in our day-in-and-day-out trials, but through it all, we have hope. God’s Word encourages us to think of all that Jesus endured, and “then you won’t become weary and give up.” (Heb. 12:3b NLT). “And this hope will not lead to disappointment” (Rom. 5:5 NLT), for we have “a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:3 NKJV)

Our faith and hope are in Christ. He is that Living Hope within us.

If you have been following me for even a short while, you know I love to dig into the definitions of God’s Word. In the opening scripture, the Hebrew word for hope is tiqvah (which comes from qavah), literally meaning a cord (as an attachment), expectancy, things hoped for.

I love that definition. We all need that cord, that scarlet cord, as our attachment of hope, of expectancy, to hang onto.

In all our heartaches, the Lord longs to comfort us, to be our cord of hope. God draws us near, saying, “I drew them with gentle cords, with bands of love.” (Hos. 11:4 NKJV) Those treacherous cords that bound Jesus to the cross were God’s cords of love for you and me. The Lord gently takes those cords and binds up a breaking heart with great love and tenderness.

When trouble and distress try to wrap themselves around you to destroy your cord of hope, do you ask yourself as Job did, “And where is now my hope?” (Job 17:15 KJV) If your hope is waning, the Lord will “transform [your] Valley of Trouble into a gateway of hope.” (Hos. 2:15 NLT) He will open the door of His tiqvah hope for you.

The writer of Hebrews encourages you, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” (Heb. 10:23 NIV)

Your hope in Christ is greater than your circumstances, greater than your depression, greater than your grief, greater than your debt, greater than your lack, greater than yourself.

“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” (Is. 40:31 NKJV) Wait used here is qavah. This is the word tiqvah comes from. Qavah means hope, to bind together, to expect, to look eagerly for.

Eagerly expect Him to bind you to Himself, to give you a future and a hope. Bind your heart, your soul, your spirit with the Lord that you may cling eternally to that cord of hope!

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
(Rom. 15:13 NKJV)
