NYC Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and 2013 Spring Trends

By Jeannie West –

Currently, NYC is hosting the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. A who’s who of premier designers put on fabulous shows to exhibit their fall 2013 Runway Collections. Fall 2013-Wow! Meanwhile, in the real world, some of us are still shoveling snow.

I know it’s difficult to think of wearing shorts and sandals when some of you are knee deep in snow, but hey, why not look ahead to the glorious spring days to uplift our spirits?

Now, I’m not someone who follows fashion trends as gospel when it comes to dressing, but I do enjoy the creativity and the vision of some of my favorite designers….if only from afar.

Spring trends for this year are many, but I’d like to share a few of my favorites:

1. Black and White. Timeless and classic. Great for work or play. Investing in quality black & white pieces will pay off not only for this spring but for many years to come. These are my all time favorite go to colors (or non colors)….just ask my closet!

2. Sheer Materials: Silk, Chiffon, Organza, Mousseline. Feminine and beautiful. What’s not to like?

3. Bold Stripes. I’m not sure if stripes have ever gone OUT of style?! Great with denim or navy stripes for an always chic – nautical look.

4. Low (kitten) pointy heels. We know how important it is to be comfortable in our footwear, but don’t we also want to look polished? Kitten heels are perfect with skirts or slacks, and they can also elevate a pair of jeans or even a pair of slouchy/bermuda shorts which will also be trending this spring.

5. Pencil Skirts. A versatile piece that can go from classy/ladylike to sexy/sophisticated. Sound good?

6. Power Suits. Suits can be feminine yet bold. Structured or relaxed, if you want to make a statement, a nice power suit is your friend!

7. Florescent. Need a little pick me up? Go bright with some neon colors. We’re never too old to show off some pizazz….go for it!

May your winter blues give way to glorious colors of spring that’s just around the corner. Hang in there!

  1. Seems to be a lot of new takes on the same styles although I’m please to hear the kitten heel is coming back. Neon colors sound fun but I think we need to be careful with them…maybe just an accent piece. Thanks for the update,
