Getting Around NYC the Easy Way this Holiday Season

Getting around NYC the easy way

New York City is known for its immense size and exciting attractions. With all of the wonderful things to do here, you might be overwhelmed by the prospect of getting to and from each location. Fortunately, the Big Apple provides some easy ways for you to navigate around the city so that you can see all of the best things NYC has to offer.

Taxis

Taxicabs are omnipresent throughout the city, and you can catch a ride from locations in Manhattan and the other boroughs. A cab can be hailed by simply standing next to a street and holding your arm out to your side. Taxis that have their lights illuminated at the top of their vehicles are available to stop and pick up passengers. If you are traveling into the city from one of the local airports, you can usually negotiate a ride for a flat-rate fee. It is generally customary to tip a driver 20 percent of the total fare.

Subway

Subway trains traveling underground provide a unique way to see the city. You can purchase a single-fare ticket or a pass that is good for multiple days from a vending machine located at a station. Attendants stationed in booths are available at most subway stations to answer any questions. Taking the subway is a cheaper alternative to other modes of transportation and gives you a better chance to interact with some of the locals. Musicians and other performance artists frequently perform aboard trains and at subways stations.

Tour Buses

You can take a tour of the city while traveling to various destinations by booking a ride on a tour bus. There are even hop on hop off New York tour buses that allow you to make stops at several locations throughout the city and then catch another ride at your convenience. Most bus tours are narrated by knowledgeable guides who provide detailed information about much of the city’s history and points of interest.

Boats

The waterways around New York City make it easy to reach many destinations by boat. The Staten Island Ferry offers free service between Manhattan and Staten Island and passes by the Statue of Liberty while en route. Ferry service is also available to Governor’s Island and certain points in Northern New Jersey. You even have the option of taking a water taxi tour if you want to see more of NYC from the water.

Bicycle

If you want to peddle your way through the city and enjoy the outdoors, you can rent a bicycle from a Citi Bike station, weather permitting. These stations are located throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens and include more than 8,000 bikes that are available for rental. You can purchase a day pass from a station kiosk and use it to unlock one of the parked bikes. After you have finished riding it, simply return it to any station.

There are many ways to explore New York City, and each method offers an exciting way to reach the destination of your choice. With all of the transportation choices, you should have no trouble getting around the metropolitan area during your visit.
