Expert Tips for Super Summer Hair

Heat and humidity are good for some things, like making plants grow, but not so much when it comes to having smooth, shiny youthful hair. I asked some of my celebrity hair expert friends for their tips for taming tangles and frizz of summer, and got some great tips from the best.

Tips for Every Hair Type

Bangs could make you look younger, but if you have curly, very thick or textured hair they could get unruly with the heat and humidity. You want them to lay flat, but they want to curl up and seem to take on a life of their own. If you have thin, straight or limp hair, the bangs could stick to your forehead and look greasy. You may want to slick back those bangs for a few months. For my own bangs, I wash and blow dry them every day, but only wash the rest of my hair every other day.

Belladonna Salon Founder Gregory Gary says, “Try a little hair serum after washing to keep your curls moisturized and keep bounce and spring in your hair.”

Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist Jenny Cho recommends Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Deep Conditioning Shine Mask. “Use it in the shower for three to five minutes for radiant, soft locks that will glisten under the summer sun. The steam will open up the cuticle layers for the treatment to penetrate and condition the hair. Rinse it out with cool water to lock in the moisture.”

Wash Out Build Up
All hair can get damaged in the summer from excessive sun, chlorinated pools, salt water and constant tugging into ponytails. Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy Celebrity Stylist Jen Atkin advises, “My go to remedies for damaged hair as a result of the summer months are oils like almond and coconut oils. This is why I love Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy’s Damage and Color Repair line. The products are loaded with oils that are great for your hair and lightweight so you don’t have to worry about weighing your hair down.” Atkin recommends Clear Scalp and Hair Beauty Therapy’s Color and Damage Repair Shampoo and Conditioner for washing out any build up from swimming.

Cho says you’re never too old to wear braids – it’s all in how you create them and how much confidence you exude while wearing them. She says, “A braid is always a great style, especially in the summer. There are a lot of different braiding techniques like French braids, fishtail, waterfall – check out You Tube videos or visit the Suave Beauty Facebook  page to watch a few tutorials and learn how easy it really is to do. Learning different braids will change your hair dreams this summer!”

If you’re not sure that braids are your thing (or you just don’t want to show up your daughter, wink), Atkin suggests a top knot. “An easy summer style that is quick to do is the top knot. Just pull hair into a high ponytail, but don’t pull hair all the way through the elastic. Go for a small loop on top with the rest of your ponytail twisted around the base. Secure the knot in place with large French hair pins.

Second Day Hair
Most of the celebrity hair stylists agree that washing your hair every day is not necessary, Cho suggests reviving your “easy-breezy summer hairstyle” on its second day with Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo– “Use it at the roots to soak up the oils. Plus, it will add amazing texture to your hair,” she says.

Fantastic hair is a huge confidence-booster, so don’t let summer wreck your look. Go out there and look gorgeous with these tips!
