Do You Have a Servant’s Heart?

By Deborah H. Bateman –

Galatians 5:13 – For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

Do you have a servant’s heart? In Galatians 5:13 we are told to serve one another by love. I recently saw one of the most profound examples of a servant’s heart and was really blessed by it. My mother-in-law recently passed away and my brother, sister-in-law, and sisters served my husband’s family in a way that brought honor and glory to God.

They coordinated and prepared a fantastic meal to serve my husband’s family after the funeral. Not only did they prepare the meal, but they set the whole thing up. When we returned from the funeral the kitchen was full of many delicious dishes. They had tables and chairs brought in from our church and set up so we could enjoy a sit-down meal as a family.

They served us willingly, unselfishly, and completely. They not only cooked the meal, delivered it and set everything up, but they also cleaned up after dinner was over. My husband’s family and I were blessed by their service to us.

They set a great example of what it means to serve one another in love. It really meant a lot to me and my husband and his family. It honored my mother-in-law in her passing and it showed God’s love to my husband’s family in their time of grief.

I know people used to do this more in days gone by, but in the world we live in today often we don’t take the time to show one another we care. First Peter 1:22 reminds us that we should love one another fervently with a pure heart, “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:” I challenge you to look for ways that you can serve one another.

Things to think about:

  • In what ways do you find an occasion to serve others?
  • How does our service to one another honor God?
  • In what ways can we honor one another through our service to each other?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for these Scriptures that remind us to serve one another in love. Help us to serve one another in a way that brings honor and glory to Your name. Forgive us of the times we fail You by not taking time to show our love to each other by finding occasions to serve one another.  Help us to have a servant’s heart and serve one another in joy and gladness. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
